Imagine submerging yourself in the waters of Las Canteras and discovering, a few meters from the shore, the ecosystem that makes this beach a unique refuge in the Atlantic.
An Experience Between Science and Sea
Latitud Azul, together with the City Council of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, organized Discover Las Canteras, an activity framed within the marine custody project of the Las Canteras Microarea. It was not a theoretical lecture: attendees put on their snorkel masks and learned about marine biodiversity with water up to their waist.
Workshops That Connect with the Ocean
The day included three high-level outreach workshops:
- Marine litter: the plastic we do not see but that fish do swallow.
- Marine biodiversity: the species that live under the sand of Las Canteras.
- Sharks and rays: the essential role of these predators in the ecosystem balance.
The workshops were taught by professors, master's and doctoral students from ULPGC, who performed real scientific sampling demonstrations and shared results from the latest research from the Research in Las Canteras agreement.
The Life4best Project in Action
Latitud Azul develops a European Life4best project for the protection of sharks and rays in the Canary Islands. At this event, the team presented a specialized workshop on these species and their ecological importance. Las Canteras is precisely a key location for their conservation.
Why Does It Matter?
Every person who enters the water informed leaves transformed into a guardian of the sea. Citizen science is not an abstract concept: it is a neighbor from Las Palmas identifying a longnose sawfish under the Las Canteras Bar.
