In just 100 meters of Caleta de Trillo (Alegranza), 3,667 objects weighing 321 kilos were removed. 97.7% were plastics. Some had been in the sea since 1999.
These data are not fiction. They are science. And they were presented by Alicia Herrera Ulibarri, member of Latitud Azul and outreach coordinator of the EOMAR group, during the premiere of the Ocean Film Tour 2022 in Spain.
Film Festival with a Real Message
As every year, Latitud Azul collaborates with the Ocean Film Tour Film Festival, organized by Kinema Producciones. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria was the first stop of the festival, which then toured 18 other Spanish cities.
Alicia Herrera was the special guest of the event, where she showed with videos, photos, and data the reality of microplastic contamination in the islands.
The Reality in Numbers
The numbers from the first marine debris inventory in Alegranza are staggering:
- 3,667 objects removed in just 100 meters of beach
- 321 kilos of marine litter
- 97.7% of the total were plastics
- Some debris had been floating more than 20 years
"We Are Still in Time"
Despite the harshness of the data, Alicia Herrera's message was one of active hope: "We are still in time". The outreach coordinator showed how every person can help the ecosystem and reduce their plastic consumption.
It is not an empty message. It is an invitation to act from information and individual responsibility.
Cinema That Moves Consciences
The Ocean Film Tour is not just entertainment: it is a sensitization tool that connects the beauty of the ocean with the urgency to protect it. And Latitud Azul is always there, putting data where emotions are.
The sea needs us. Shall we start today?
