Care Work That Remains Unseen

The project name says it all: care work is the invisible axis that sustains everyday life. Cooking, cleaning, caring for children or elderly relatives, attending to emotional health... essential tasks that take up millions of hours every day and rarely appear in official statistics.

Historias de lo Invisible aims to change that narrative, showing that caring is not an innate talent or a natural obligation: it is work that must be distributed fairly.

Objective

To make care work visible as an invisible pillar of social sustainability, promoting an equitable distribution among men, women, and diverse individuals in domestic and community settings.

Workshops in Secondary Education on egalitarian masculinities and shared responsibility
Sessions with health professionals for comprehensive equality approaches
Outreach materials adapted for different audiences
Dialogue spaces with families and the educational community

Methodology

The project combines participatory workshops with group dynamics based on evidence regarding the distribution of unpaid work. Collaboration with teaching and healthcare staff ensures a coherent and sustainable approach.

Collaboration

Latitud Azul works in partnership with educational centers across the islands, healthcare professionals, and equality organizations to ensure quality and impact in all interventions.

Nuestro Plan de Acción

Workshops for caregivers and professionals

Awareness-raising workshops on equality and care, aimed at groups of women caregivers, health professionals, and professionals from the Gran Canaria Island Network for Prevention and Comprehensive Care for Women and Minors Victims of Gender-Based Violence. A total of 15 workshops were conducted.

Workshops for educational centers

These workshops promote the idea of new masculinities in schools in order to redefine and value care tasks as a shared responsibility for all of society and not just for one part of it, women. By working on the importance of gender equality from this perspective, a cultural change is fostered that challenges traditional masculinity stereotypes.

Encounter at Talleres Palermo

The encounter is part of a day that combined debate and reflection on the value of care from a gender perspective. All of this through enjoyment, facilitating citizen participation and promoting spaces for change and transformation in an educational leisure environment.

Kay Machín Benítez

Divemaster, photographer and sea enthusiast

Divemaster and photographer, in love with the sea since childhood. His experience as a diver has connected him with the need to act to protect it, giving visibility to what happens beneath the surface. He uses his camera to do his bit for sustainability from a close, real perspective. He has worked on a range of environmental and social projects. He currently works in audiovisual production for several companies and projects, including those of Latitud Azul.

The "Historias de lo Invisible" project focuses on deepening the importance of raising awareness about gender equality by proposing a review of the care culture based on values such as reciprocity and cooperation. From this perspective, the importance of sustainability of life is emphasized and traditional gender roles in the distribution of work and care are questioned.
