Las Canteras Ecotourism Microarea

Participatory forum for responsible ecotourism in Las Canteras. Latitud Azul facilitates dialogue between citizens, administration and the tourism sector.

A Tourism Model Compatible with Conservation

The Las Canteras Ecotourism Microarea is a participatory initiative that seeks to define and apply a sustainable tourism model in the area of Las Canteras beach, in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

The Participatory Forum

Latitud Azul participates as a facilitator in the forum, a dialogue space between administrations, tourism businesses, associations and citizens. This is not about restricting access: it is about tourism generating value without degrading the resource that makes it possible.

Project Activities

  • Guided snorkel tours with a conservation approach
  • Interpretive signage about marine biodiversity
  • Training for local tourism sector professionals
  • Monitoring the impact of recreational activities on the ecosystem

Nuestro Plan de Acción

01

Creating a citizen participation space for seaweed arrivals discussion

The Las Canteras Micro-area participation forum has prioritized the need to deepen research and scientific knowledge on the management, conservation, and bioindustrial potential of the macroalgae that wash ashore on the beach.

02

Outreach and good practices: Know Las Canteras

This axis focuses on strengthening the management model through active participation, scientific outreach, and the promotion of citizen co-responsibility. The Know Las Canteras 2025 workshop featured an outreach activity combining a snorkeling experience with educational workshops on biodiversity, marine litter, and the role of sharks and rays.

03

Knowledge transfer and networking: Balearic Islands-Canarias

The project aims to create a network of synergies for knowledge exchange and feedback between marine custody processes across the national territory. A total of two archipelagos, five islands, eight custody processes, and twelve coordinated entities will work in network, aligning local practices with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), using the Las Canteras model as a beacon for sustainable coastal management.
